Description

Notes
The Black Hill Spruce tree is one of the more compact trees compared to other spruces. It is considered to be a subspecies of White Spruce and does well during the winter as it is very resistant to winter injury.

Uses
This tree is typically used as Christmas trees, for privacy, and as windbreak.

Wildlife Value
Many birds enjoy this tree for nesting and cover from the harsh winter weather. It also produces seeds which serve as nutrition for birds whereas the bark serves as nutrition for porcupines.

History & Lore
The Black Hills Spruce tree was used by many Plains Native Americans. Inner bark and shoots were eaten. Sap from this tree was used for gum. The wood was also collected to create Tipi poles.
